First Visits at Smile Shoppe Pediatric Dentistry Springdale
WHAT TO EXPECT
Smile Shoppe Pediatric Dentistry Springdale provides dental care for infants, children, and teens. Dr. Jessica Sliger is a board-certified pediatric dental specialist who works with families across Northwest Arkansas.
Many families come to the practice because of Dr. Sliger’s experience supporting children with autism and other special healthcare needs. She is happy to see patients of all ages and abilities. Many of Dr. Sliger’s earlier pediatric patients still see her in adulthood because they want to continue to see a dentist they know and trust.
Every appointment is adapted to the patient, ensuring each person feels comfortable throughout their visit. A range of sedation options are available for patients who need that little bit extra support to tolerate treatment. Get in touch with our team to discuss these options if you think your child might need sedation dentistry.
What Does the First Visit Involve
A CALM AND THOROUGH EVALUATION
During the first visit, Dr. Sliger performs a gentle evaluation of the child’s oral health and development.
For infants and very young children, the evaluation may be completed using a knee-to-knee position. The child sits comfortably in a parent’s lap while the dentist completes the evaluation.
During the evaluation, the team will look for tooth eruption patterns, any early signs of cavities, bite development, and functional concerns.
After the evaluation, Dr. Sliger will review her findings with the parents. This conversation helps families understand their child’s current oral health and what to expect as their teeth develop. Dr. Sliger is happy to answer any questions parents may have.
Initial appointments typically last between 40 minutes and one hour. Some visits may take longer depending on the child’s needs. Children with special healthcare needs may require additional time to feel comfortable during the visit. Dr. Sliger takes a trauma-informed approach to dental care. This means visits are adapted to reduce stress and ensure each patient is comfortable.

When Should Children First Visit the Dentist?
EARLY VISITS SUPPORT HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT
Children should visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting. These visits allow the dentist to monitor oral development and identify any potential problems at the earliest possible stage.
Even if a child does not yet have visible teeth, an early dental visit can still be helpful. The appointment allows the dentist to evaluate their oral development. It’s also a chance to spend time with our team so your child gets accustomed to dental visits.
Personalized Care and Treatment Planning
ENSURING YOUR CHILD’S ORAL HEALTH IS ON TRACK
Every child’s dental needs are different. After the dental evaluation, Dr. Sliger discusses recommendations that support your child’s oral health and development. This conversation may include preventive treatment recommendations, a discussion about diet and habits that can affect the teeth, or a suggestion about further monitoring.
Financial consultations are available when needed to help families understand treatment options and costs.
